Jake,

Generally speaking this depends on what you mean by "busy" and the architecture of your site as they do specifically limit the number of queries and amount of bandwidth per day . As you're currently using Servage and are thus in the same boat as me I'd simply advise always having backups ready, such that at the point that your site "takes off" or worst case is suspended you can simply move it to a dedicated server or quality VPS and carry on. Any caching you can do to reduce the number of queries / processing and just serve up static HTML pages will help you fly under the radar of any issues to an extent.

Certain things such as the inability to access MTA logs, the expirations of messages stored on the mail server after set periods and the lack of proper statistics means I'll probably be paying a bit more and moving to a VPS come my own renewal. If there was just a little more control of the above I'd be able to recommend servage as a good "stepping stone" to a dedi (provided you don't need support) but as it is, I can't :|

I am about to launch a website and the goal is of course to get a busy site with lots of users....

At the moment I am using servage, but after having read your posts I am a bit scared to use Servage for my website...

Which (affordable) host should I choose that won't suspend my account or mess anything up for me, if I get heavy user traffic on my website?

Thanks....

Humm, interesting case. Seems like there tech support department chucked a wobbly.

Heads may well roll on this one.

Needless to say there actions are less then professional in this case. But I have heard bad and good regarding this company.

Personally I always prefer to have my own kit, which I tend to setup prior to sending for hosting.

Still at this time not sure where to send my current server for hosting. Many companies out there, but not many that offer the features that RapidSwitch do and for there price. But maybe this case shows that RapidSwitch are over stretching themselves.

The search continues.

Rapidswitch reported to Police for data theft and sabotage

After purchasing 2 dedicated servers with Rapidswitch.com earlier this month, one running Linux the other running Windows 2008, a problem came up with one of the servers with installation of iso image.

Sales had said before purchase that install from iso of even operating system was possible through remote access system Rapidswitch.com claim that they offer and virtual cd drive feature. After spending 3 hours with Rapidswitch.com support trying to use this remote access keyboard and mouse system it transpired that it did not work properly, Rapidswitch claimed some cable problems, but in the end they said virtual drive could not work either. They also refused assistance in mounting the iso image. The technician at customer side claims that throughout this issue there was a some feeling of an attitude issues with at least some of the Rapidswitch.com support staff.

When asked to either fix the problem or refund the money for this server but everything was prepaid through VISA card, Rapidswitch.com technical support manager started a runaround of excuses in circles trying to avoid the issue of refund. When sent email saying they would have to refund money for the server/service that did not function as promised or otherwise be subject to complaint to VISA, they decided to terminate the business account, cutting off WITHOUT ANY PRIOR WARNING also the other server running Windows 2008 and that was in no way connected to the problem of the Linux server and which several people have worked on for 9 days configuring systems, data, databases etc., causing the organization thousands of pounds in loss due to loss of data that Rapidswitch have in effect hijaced.

Even after Rapidswitch.com was being made aware that their irresponsible action to cut the server off without notice was causing the organization thousands of pounds in loss as workers were cut off without notice and their data and all configurations are now lost, Rapidswitch still refused to reconnect the server even to allow recovery of the data. Perhaps they deleted all the data and cannot reconnect it?

As a result and on the advise of solicitors Rapidswitch have now been reported to the Maidenhead Police Department for data theft and sabotage. Police Case Reference is LC312112408.

Is this what the level of UK hosting companies is coming to?

Hi,

Do you still use RapidSwitch/49pence?

I've got a server that needs hosting, and I'm looking at either Redstation or RapidSwitch. I'm interested to know the access speed to your server, and is this a constant speed?

Thanks,

Matt

Awful Awful .....

I have used Servage for a few years to host domains, currently ten. These have all dissapeared. No information from them, I found out via a friend.

When I asked them about it their response was "we have had a problem with our storage, you have to restore from your own backups".

I´m now looking elsewhere.

Thanks Brenda :) I've got a Bowie Singles collection, Ziggy Stardust and of course "I'm afraid of Americans" but don't think I've listened to the whole of Diamond Dogs and wasn't aware of Outside at all. I'll have to pick both of those up and have a listen. Thanks for the recommendations, it is good to know people are dropping by at random and not finding the old writing style too laborious ;)

Rowan you write in a most excellent fashion and have really gotten to the heart of this collection from Trent - very nice synapsis.

If you enjoyed this, you might want to go wayyyy back in time and visit David Bowie's Diamond Dogs album - he appropriated the 1984 theme for the entire album and built a collection of songs around this, and even tried to buy the rights to the book from Orwell's widow (she said no). It's more generalized than Trent's offering but Bowie has always been into sophisticated lyrics and heavy symbolism and is witty and nihilistic all at the same time. A complete cynic. Another offering from Bowie much more recently is another album he did, Outside, which is a collection of songs that tells the story of a murderer from the viewpiont of several characters inside the story, and surprise surprise, Reznor was actively involved with Bowie for the production and tour of Outside and they remain good buddies according to the gossip machine.

I've been with Servage.net for 3 months, as of February 2008. My sites have been innaccessible 5 times during that period. Entire sites were "unable to be found on the server. SITES, not files.

Responses to support tickets say, "We're aware of the problem. Please be patient."

Once I couldn't access any sites for over 8 hours.

Whenever I have asked them what caused the problem, I get no response.

There are also frequent database connection problems.

Another negative is their 5-day money back guarantee. There is no pro-rating. Once you sign up with them, you're stuck - unless you get smart and decide to change hosts.

I am changing hosts.

Bottom line. Servage is a webmaster's nightmare.
