To Vista or not to Vista?

So I finally got my copy of Vista Business through from Dell for my M1210 laptop after a month or two of waiting - I paid £11 for the privilege and it took an impressive two days to get from the US of A to the South Coast of England. Funnily enough, Vista is only worth $2.70 according to the customs statement.

But I can’t come up with a decent reason to actually install it…

The main reason is that currently on my laptop everything more or less works. All my data lives in an encrypted TrueCrypt file (which now apparently works on Vista) and although the machine has stubbornly refused to let the OpenSuse installer place a copy of something vastly superior next to XP on the drive, that is the OS I really want on there.

The new eye candy would be nice to have a look at, but it’ll probably also reduce the battery life of the machine. Because I didn’t have XP 64Bit, Dell would only ship Vista 32 Bit, so I can’t get the benefit of having a true 64bit Windows for the first time. The additional security features would maybe tempt me were this the family machine - but that runs OpenSuse and thus doesn’t really have any security problems…

If there were a DirectX 10 game I wanted to play I could try it out on my desktop machine, but as it is, why expend the effort and risk breaking something?

There also seems to be a psychological aspect - I’ve been provided with Vista Business because I had XP Professional, so I know I’m missing some of the Vista features, this again seems to lead to a “why bother” mindset.

The only real reason I can come up with to install - if we get a ticket in complaining something doesn’t work on Vista, I can load it up and give it a whirl - necessary in a way, but hardly exciting is it?
