Hi Rowan,

RE my post above from Feb 2009 (just fell across this post, and saw you reply!) I got a server from an American company they were reasonable on price (not the cheapest or most expensive) however they seemed to offer good customer service. I didn't go for the managed service. Since I went with them, I have had to upgrade the server from the basic to a more expensive one (cheap one kept falling over due to traffic spikes at peak times) 2nd server has worked a treat, not falling over at all for the last 6 months.

I also moved smaller sites onto another basic hosting company, and touch wood so far have had no problems either. The hosting company is UK based and the support (non-telephone) but still very good.

I ahve a friend who has been with servage since October 2009 and he reports no issues with them. However I am burnt now so will never trust or recommend them myself.

Hope that helps

I've been using servage for about 2 years now. I've tried several hosting companies and they all have their pros and cons. Most of my web clients use godaddy and personally I hate it. Others have used host monster for what it has. I myself have used at least a dozen hosting providers and so far I've not really had a serious issue with them.

Once I did have one site hacked, but that was because the ftp password was too easy and someone had a grudge against the restaurant whose site i have on my server. Changed the password to something more secure, notified servage of the breach and a year later nothing has happened again.

Currently on one account I have about 30 different domains, 45 subdomains and 22 databases. I setup my own horde and roundcube webmail clients for the domains and at least 150 email accounts.

What I don't like, is the fact that I have to use their SSL security and not my thawte or comodo certificates that I resell, as well as a few limitations for e-mail creation as well as cpanel features and accessibility (java console, ssh and telnet access). They say they will have some of those features added in the feature, but when I needed something urgently for my server, they have installed it for me on a couple ocassions.

So yeah, compared to many other web hosting companies I've tried in the past, my experiences with servage have been positive for the most part.
If I find a better provider, I'll probably switch but migrating all these sites will be hecktick at least here in Ecuador where broadband is low and expensive.

Servage ignores me repeatedly when i am trying to get something resolved that is their fault! They have been ignoring me for 5 days now. They just do not respond to my ticket! Only 1 response and then when I show proof that their system messed up they stopped responding...I cannot risk losing everything, I think I am going to have to find a new host after using them for 2 years!

Very poor service. Have had almost all of my sites hacked on numerous ocasions. MySQL keeps going up and down like a yoyo on my sites and you cant send mail from your accounts to other email providers like hotmail etc as the email server ip's seem to be blacklisted. Moving when my hosting is up for renual.

Hi Dave

I had a couple of similar security incidents when I was with them, however I did have an outdated script or two lying around so just put it down to that at the time (lazy I know...). I'm not overly sure if they use suphp / similar, but I'm guessing from what I've seen and read that they don't / didn't (anyone who still has an account who can find this out do please comment below).

Looking at your post they seem to commit the cardinal sin of telling you what to do without explaining why or what happened and the statement "However it seems due to open source code the scripts are easily compromised with these unwanted codes." is just unforgivable... If a particular open source script installed on an account (i.e wordpress) is out of date this should be obvious from a cursory glance at the files / db.

If the honest truth is "we don't know precisely how your files were edited and our logs don't record that information / go back that far" then at least that's being honest. Servage's replies give the impression of an operative who doesn't really know what they're talking about, but aren't escalating the ticket / checking with more experienced colleagues, which is sad. I'm sure readers would be interested to know where you ended up getting your own dedicated server and whether or not you went with a fully managed option. I ended up on a Slicehost VPS, which at the time of writing I'm very happy with.

I used servage for a year and a half, after a few months it all went wrong big time. With constant hacking of my site - then servage blaming my passwords and open source coded scripts, then massive downtime (24hrs in the worst case) and a support team that skim reads support tickets/ignores certain questions. The writting was on the wall, I left. Sooo glad I did.

My story there, I hope the link is allowed. If not please delete the link. Feel free to comment on it, and add your servage experince. The whole world deserves to know just how bad they are.

Pros: Cheap, huge space
Cons: Everything else

If you have more than one website hosted there, or multiple domains/subdomains, if only one of them reach daily transfer limit, your full account with all domains will get blocked for full 24 hrs without possibility to enable it within "punish" time.
It's not possible to setup different bandwith or capacity quota per domain, mail or ftp account. Their support is arrogant, they lie, and they often offer only empty phrases for answer. If you can reach em.
For last 5 days I cant login to my account, passwords are somehow changed and their password resetting system is broken. I cant fill ticket because I cannot login.
If I use my default mail for contact I got automated reply that my mail is already in their database so that I rather fill online ticket.
I cant call them because they don't have (LOL) telephone number.
Their security is almost non existent. People reporting hacked sites non stop, slow databases, slow loading, bad support all around.
If you need site to brag with storage capacity use Servage, otherwise avoid like plague.

Servage will let you down when you need it most, like what happened to me today: I cannot upload my work: 600mb big interactive CD for my client because I cant log into my account or FTP, and that's main reason why I paid for servage host.

Several months ago I made and deployed one flash game for my online gaming community (EVE online) into servage.
I suffered slash dot effect, bandwith got sucked and they blocked it for 24 hrs.
I even offered them money for extra bandwith, but they just said: not possible.
That flash game was made special for big patch day for that game, which lasted 24 hrs and it went offline 4 hrs after deployment. So my several days of work was almost wasted.

They advertise huge monthly bandwith.

But info about daily limit is well buried in their ToS.

Tf you try to fill full advertised space, your account will get blocked for some puny reason: cpu usage, max hits achieved, etc.

To choose servage or not?
You decision.

Jake,

Generally speaking this depends on what you mean by "busy" and the architecture of your site as they do specifically limit the number of queries and amount of bandwidth per day . As you're currently using Servage and are thus in the same boat as me I'd simply advise always having backups ready, such that at the point that your site "takes off" or worst case is suspended you can simply move it to a dedicated server or quality VPS and carry on. Any caching you can do to reduce the number of queries / processing and just serve up static HTML pages will help you fly under the radar of any issues to an extent.

Certain things such as the inability to access MTA logs, the expirations of messages stored on the mail server after set periods and the lack of proper statistics means I'll probably be paying a bit more and moving to a VPS come my own renewal. If there was just a little more control of the above I'd be able to recommend servage as a good "stepping stone" to a dedi (provided you don't need support) but as it is, I can't :|

I am about to launch a website and the goal is of course to get a busy site with lots of users....

At the moment I am using servage, but after having read your posts I am a bit scared to use Servage for my website...

Which (affordable) host should I choose that won't suspend my account or mess anything up for me, if I get heavy user traffic on my website?

Thanks....
